In less than a week since beta 2, but Apple has just released Beta 3 of iOS 4.1 and the corresponding SDK.

It's been reported that this beta fixes some bugs that were in the previous betas, as well as placing emphasis on GameCenter, specifically the support for the iPhone 3G and 2nd gen iPod Touch.

Other things added in the beta include fixing the proximity sensor issue of the iPhone 4, as well as adding a remote control for Bluetooth audio, and parental controls over GameCenter and FaceTime.

Developers can get the new beta build here.

Jailbreaking has been deemed legal by the Library of Congress, MuscleNerd has already shown that jailbreaking the iPhone 4 was possible, and now it's finally here - the fourth rendition of the Dev Team's jailbreak tool for all iDevices, including the iPhone 4.

This hack works right from the device itself, if you just visit www.jailbreakme.com (the servers are getting a bit slammed right now since the release, but bookmark that page).

Once an iPhone 4 is jailbroken with this tool, a user can then proceed to unlock the device with ultrasn0w.

Apple has released the new Magic Trackpad, a Bluetooth accessory that brings multi-touch gestures originally available on new MacBooks, for use with desktops. This accessory is $69 and available in Apple Stores as well as online. In addition, they released a new battery charger for wireless devices such as the Magic Trackpad, Apple Keyboard, and Magic Mouse.

Magic Trackpad

The Magic Trackpad is made of smooth glass and aluminum, much like the trackpads that are on current-gen MacBooks. It offers the patented multi-touch technology, which will allow users to scroll smoothly up and down on pages with 'inertial scrolling', pinch zoon in/out, image rotation, and three finger swipe through for web pages and/or photos.

It can be configured to support single or two button commands and also supports tap-to-click as well as the physical click (the entire trackpad is the button).

This accessory had first leaked early in the summer, and just got FCC approval only earlier this month. At that time it was only identified as a mysterious Bluetooth device.

Apple Battery Charger

In addition to the Magic Trackpad, Apple released a new Battery Charger, in which they claim to set a new industry standard by having the lowest standby power usage of any similar chargers on the market.

When other battery chargers are done charging up batteries, they are still drawing energy even though there aren't batteries to charge. The Apple Battery Charger will sense when batteries are done charging in order to automatically reduce the amount of power that it needs in standby.

The batteries that come with the charger are designed to maintain a high charge capacity for hundreds of charges. This should take care of the old task of needing to buy new batteries every couple of months.

A single Battery Charger will come with six AA NiMH batteries, which is enough for any Magic Trackpad or Magic Mouse or Apple Keyboard, allowing spares as well.

"Unlike many other reusable batteries, these batteries have an incredibly long service life — up to 10 years," Apple said. "Which means you can finally break the cycle of buying and disposing of those toxic, single-use alkaline batteries. The batteries that come with the Apple Battery Charger kit also have an extraordinarily low self-discharge rate. Even after a year of sitting in a drawer, they still retain 80 percent of their original charge. That way you always have backup power when you need it."

The Wall Street Journal and other wire services have reported that the Citibank app had a hidden security flaw. The app would save personal account information in a hidden file on the user's iPhone.

The information that is saved would include the account numbers, bill payment information, as well as security access codes. This release will soon be available to developers for testing.

According to AppleInsider, people familiar with the matter are saying that only a limited number of developers are already expecting the first pre-release builds of 10.6.5 in the next 48 hours. Another wider release will be accessible to all paid Apple developers as early as the weekend.

With the 10.6.4 release last month, many users reported an assortment of graphics issues, which ranged from choppy video performance to sporadic corruption issues within the Safari web browser.

Game companies Blizzard and Valve have already suggested that graphics issues with some of their newer titles could be a result of the changes of OpenGL implementation that was shipped in Mac OS X 10.6.4.

If you have Skype on your iPhone, now would be a good time to check for an update for it.

The Skype app for iPhone has been updated to now support multitasking on iOS 4, so it is now possible to receive Skype calls while other apps are currently running on the device. This even works when the phone is on the lock screen. When on a call, the user can do other things on the device, such as check email and surf the web or use another app. It's all supported via the multitasking API on iOS 4.

Also, Skype has decided to not charge a supplementary fee for making calls over a 3G network.

New reports have detailed that the relationship between Apple and AT&T has been tense, and reveals that Steve Jobs did consider dropping AT&T numerous times and even leaving for Verizon as far back as 2007, when the iPhone was first introduced.

This tense relationship is described in detail in this month's issue of Wired magazine, although it appears that the article is not up online yet. However, it has been summarized on Monday by Jason D. O'Grady of ZDNet.

The entire exclusive partner arrangement is similar to that of a 'loveless celebrity marriage,' as AppleInsider was kind enough to put it. It's one of those marriages that go wrong very quickly right after the honeymoon.

It seems that Apple was unwilling to restrict the Internet capabilities of their device, while AT&T has been struggling with the overwhelming pressure placed on their networks with this single brand of device.

According to an annonymous source in the magazine article, it seems that Jobs actually did consider breaking ties with AT&T at least a half-dozen times.

There was even a point in 2007 where the Apple engineers reportedly visited the headquarters of Qualcomm in order to consider the prospects of building an entirely new CDMA iPhone for Verizon. However, this proved to be too costly and complicated, since an entirely new model of iPhone would have to be made to fit new chips in.

Another interesting fact from the article is that Qualcomm had already started working on a chip that would allow the iPhone to work on both AT&T and Verizon networks. If recent rumors are to mean anything, there may be a sliver of hope for a CDMA iPhone for Verizon in January 2011 (but no guarantees, of course).

Another important point in the spat between these two companies is the issue of tethering: Apple wanted it to be included in standard data plan charges (hence why every other carrier worldwide offered tethering before AT&T), while AT&T wanted to charge users extra for the ability to tether. AT&T won that battle, since tethering the iPhone will cost users an additional $20 a month for USB or Bluetooth tethering.

The iPhone also uses a radio from Infineon, which is a company that has previously been mostly used in Europe, where the cellular towers are much more common than North America. This caused AT&T to feel that this chip would lead to inferior reception and asked Apple to resolve the issues "together." Apple's response to this is said to be: "No, you resolve them. They're not our problem. They're your problem."

Even small things were argued over between the two corporations. An AT&T representative reportedly told one of Job's deputies that Jobs should wear a suit to meet with the AT&T Board of Directors. The answer to AT&T? "We're Apple. We don't wear suits. We don't even own suits."

What other things could the two have fought over? When is the breaking point? With light being shined on these incidents, the possibility of a Verizon iPhone may even be more likely...

The iPhone 4 has gone through a lot in the past couple of weeks - antenna issues, proximity sensor issues, and yet despite these problems, there's still a shortage because supply cannot meet demand. Oh, and now free Bumpers and cases for everyone! But let's not forget that there is also the white iPhone 4, which was not available on launch day with the black iPhone 4.

Apple has now promised us an 'end of July' delivery for the white iPhone 4, which has been delayed because of manufacturing difficulties. The problems originate from a Chinese factory called Lens Technology, which is responsible for the transforming of fine raw glass into a majority of iPhone glass panels.

The manufacturing difficulty they're experiencing for the white iPhone is finding the perfect combination of paint thickness and opacity. Paint thickness is important because they need to ensure that there will be enough clearance for the digitizer overlay. The opacity is important for the absolute whiteness that Jony Ive and Apple strive for.

Engadget reports that previous prototype models of the white iPhone 4 did appear a bit darker than the iPhone 4 dock. Hopefully the final production model of the white iPhone will be much brighter.

No, it's not iOS 4, but it's the first software update for the iPad since it's been out since April.

iOS 3.2.1 brings:

Improved Wi-Fi connectivity

Fixes an issue that could prevent copy and paste of single-page PDF attachments in Mail

Addresses an issue that could cause video playback to freeze

Improved reliability of video-out when using iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter

Added Bing as an option for Safari's search field (but why would anyone use this? ;) )

The Wi-Fi connectivity fix is great, since I've had some issues with the connection suddenly dropping and coming back a few seconds later. We'll see how it goes. I'll report if the Wi-Fi really has improved with this update.
